My Space....

One of the many reasons that I love our house is that, for the first time, I have a room of my own.   This is where I retreat to, to knit, read, create, to unwind.    The back bookcases hold my knitting books.  The side ones hold other craft books, supplies and equipment.   My fiber stash lives in the closet and ottoman.  The ottoman was a full price indulgence but the desk (Thomasville!) and love seat (a sleeper) were bargains scored from a garage sale and thrift shop.  It's all right here at the  tip of my fingers in a pretty, peaceful, package.

Saying Goodbye.....

Sadly, my Godparents' son (and my childhood playmate) has died.   He was camping with friends, taking a shower, had a massive coronary, and died.    I have not seen or spoken to C in many years (Our moms are best friends so I keep track of all of them through the family grapevine).   Since my mom called with the bad news,  I have been remembering things I have not thought of for a long time.  I remember C (and his brothers) teaching me to ride a bike.   I remember the time I bit his little brother and he told his mom that K had hit me first.   I remember when he got too big to play with me but not too big to defend me.   I remember when he got in some kind of trouble and came to stay with us for a while.   I remember when he moved to Florida to help his mom after his dad died.   I was planning to go to the funeral, but it turns out that there is not going to be one.   I did not keep in touch when I could have and now there is no chance to say good-bye.   So here it is:

Dear C,

Sleep well, find peace.   You were loved and you will be missed.

Goodbye

When two boys collide...

The phone call went something like this:

  • Teen2: "Clubs cancelled today"
  • Me: "Can you make the bus or should I come get you?"
  • Teen2: "Oh, I caught the bus, but can you pick me up at the bus stop?   I hit my head and think I have a concussion".
  • Me: "WHAT?!"
So I hang up the phone and drive to the bus stop thinking he probably does not have a concussion.  Probably, he hit his head and has a headache, maybe even a migraine (he gets them).   However, as soon as I saw him get off of the bus, I knew something more was wrong.   He was so white he was grey and he was staggering. When he got in the car, he was dazed and having trouble speaking.   After a quick stop at the house for ice (the eye was way more swollen than in this picture) and my knitting bag, I took him to the ER.   He was dazed, dizzy, sick to his stomach, seeing spots, easily confused, and in considerable pain.  The triage nurse saw him and ordered an immediate CAT scan (which came back fine, thank heavens).   He does, however, have a severe concussion.  We spent the next six hours in the ER while they tried to stabilize him.   It took three hits of Zofran to stop the stomach upset.   Then they were finally able to give him something for the pain.  Even that only took the edge off but at least he was able to sleep (we were able to let him sleep because the CAT scan was good).   Yesterday, he saw the eye doctor who confirmed that there was no permanent damage to the eye.   Today, he sees his doctor for a recheck.     He is doing much better now and will probably go back to school on Monday.  I am still having nightmares.

What, you may ask, happened to this poor child?   He was running for the bus and bumped into another boy who was doing the same.   Teen2 bounced and fell backwards hitting his head on the ground.   Not even "stupid kid tricks".   Neither of the boys did anything wrong.   Just a freaky accident.   Be still my heart.

Peace is....

Spent a couple of hours knitting on the beach today :-)

Not much knitting going on...

Look what I made for the co-op.   Not knitting I know, but they sew up fast, look nice, and sell.   What more could I ask?   I also finished a few organic baby hats and am thinking about cup cozies.

My blue Koigu socks are coming right along.  Both have less than an inch to go, then I can start last month's Rockin' Socks.   No matter what else I am knitting, I always have a pair of socks in progress.   In order to avoid SSS (second sock syndrome), I knit both at the same time.   Since I prefer toe up, I knit one toe and then the other, one foot and then the other, etc., alternating back and forth until both are done.   This has the added benefit of being able to compare foot, leg and cuff lengths easily.

Temptation is a problem for me....

Socks That Rock
March 2010

Look what came in the mail for me last week.    Usually, my socks are random.   I always have a pair on the needles but do not count them as WIP.   They reside in my handbag and are mostly knit while I am away from home.  I start a new pair when the  last one is finished and finish the current pair whenever.    That was before I joined the Rockin Sock of the month club.   This hank came last week.   Did I put it away?   No I did not!   Instead, I have been knitting only the current handbag socks (no the Citron is not finished.  Nor have I started the scheduled cardi) so that I can finish them quickly and cast on with this gorgeous stuff.  And I did so well as a monogamous knitter last year, too.

I had the most fun thing happen recently.   Someone I know asked me for a list of online resources for her daughter who has just started knitting.   I suggested that her daughter visit my blog, since I list my favorites in the side bar (look right).   It turned out that her daughter is already a visitor to my blog and even lists Serenity-Knits in her favorites.   I got such a kick out of that!
